Uses for Tianeptine

Tianeptine, can be used in treating depression, depressed bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, dysthymia and adjustment disorder.

Method of action

Tianeptine is a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer (SSRE). It accelerates uptake of serotonin in the brain with the aim of elevating mood and reducing the damage caused to the brain by hormonal response to stress.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that works to regulate our moods, memory, sleep and many other psychological and physical functions. Low levels of serotonin are widely connected with depression. Common antidepressants Prozac and Paxil are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): they function by trying to keep as much existing serotonin as possible in circulation in the body. Tianeptine does the opposite.

There is still much medical debate on why these two apparently conflicting approaches both deliver the same antidepressant effect, and ongoing research is focused on understanding in full how tianeptine functions.

Benefits of Tianeptine

Despite the uncertainty about its method of action, there are two key factors that ensure ongoing medical interest in tianeptine:

  • Side effects are minimal - even compared to SSRIs. There is very little evidence of drowsiness, weight gain or loss of libido, while dependency issues and withdrawal symptoms are rare.
  • Tianeptine is primarily metabolized by the kidneys rather than the liver. Most drugs are metabolized through the liver (or specifically, the hepatic cytochrome P450 system): because tianeptine works outside this system, the likelihood of interaction with other drugs is reduced. This makes it generally suitable for patients taking other (non-depression related) medication, as efficacy will not be compromized.

Development, trials and approvals

Tianeptine was developed by French pharmaceutical company Servier. Originally sold under the brand name Stablon, it is approved for use in France as well as several other European countries and parts of Latin America. It does not have FDA approval, but this is at least in part because Servier has not formally applied. We sell generic Tianeptine.

There have been a wide range of trials and studies around tianeptine, comparing its efficacy to other antidepressants and seeking to understand its method of action. The comparative trials have shown that stablon is at least as effective as other modern antidepressants.

Other research is investigating tianeptine as a treatment for asthma, for irritable bowel syndrome, attention deficit disorder and Parkinson's Disease.

How to take tianeptine

Tianeptine is usually taken in 12.5 mg tablets, two or three times a day after food. One of the reasons for this is its short half-life: regular top-ups are required to maintain the effect.

However if you miss a dose at a regular time, do not take a double dose next time. In the event of overdose, seek medical assistance immediately.

While in some cases improvements are noticeable within a week, onset of action normally takes 2-6 weeks.

Tianeptine side effects and contraindications

Tianeptine side effects are minimal. However, there are still some important guidelines to follow when taking any antidepressant.

  • Do not take Tianeptine in conjunction with other antidepressants such as MAO inhibitors or SSRIs.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking other medicines.
  • Do not use Tianeptine when pregnant, and tell your doctor if you are breast feeding or planning to breast feed
  • Tianeptine is not recommended for children or adolescents.

If you do experience any negative side effects, inform your doctor.

Comparable products

There are a number of antidepressants available today, from traditional "tricyclics" to the SSRIs like Prozac and Paxil. Tianeptine is different in terms of its method of function and the way it is metabolized. Most importantly of all, however, it offers comparable efficacy to other anti-depressants with fewer side-effects.
