What is Oxiracetam?

Oxiracetam is another member of the nootropic racetam family.  When introduced in 1988  Oxiracetam was the first analog to be synthesized from piracetam, the original nootropic. Since then other additions to the ‘family’ include Aniracetam and Pramiracetam. Oxiracetam is said to be more potent and faster acting than piracetam therefore smaller doses are needed to achieve similar effects.

How does it work?

Evidence demonstrates that oxiracetam works on a number of processes in the brain particularly with neurotransmission. It facilitates long-term potentiation (LTP), a molecular episode critical for learning and memory. LTP is a stage where neurons are highly active after a new mentally stimulating experience. Oxiracetam’s effect on LTP suggests that it facilitates glutamate neurotransmission.

Oxiracetam enhances acetylcholine production by increasing activity of the enzyme choline acetyl transferase. The increase of acetylcholine availability in the brain improves neuronal connectivity.

All cell membranes are composed of a double layer of lipids and lipids contribute to cellular integrity and function. Oxiracetam affects lipid metabolism and in the brain which is especially lipid-rich, it increases the amount of phospholipids especially in the important hippocampus and neocortex areas.

Oxiracetam Benefits

Some clinical studies suggested that Oxiracetam improves short-term memory and anxiety associated with mild Alzheimer’s disease but the findings were not conclusive. Whereas other studies suggests it can improve cognition and brain function in healthy adults. After 1-6 months use reported benefits have included improved performance on logic tests, enhanced attention, better concentration, and greater memory retention. Other users believe oxiracetam improves alertness and general mood.

Oxiracetam Side Effects

As with other racetam compounds, oxiracetam is well tolerated and has no serious side effects, even with long-term use. However, insomnia and mild stomach pain have been reported. People with kidney disorders may experience more severe side effects, because oxiracetam is eliminated from the body by the kidneys (rather than the liver). Seek a medical professional’s advice before using.
